How Connected Care for Every Student helps campuses create a clearer path to support

Colleges and universities have made meaningful progress in expanding student support. Counseling centers have added capacity. Virtual care has made it easier to connect outside traditional office hours. Wellness resources, peer communities, crisis services and campus programs give students more ways to find help.

That progress matters. But availability alone does not guarantee that students will use the support available to them.

For many institutions, the next challenge is helping students take that first step, especially students who could benefit from support but may not know where to begin. That means moving beyond simply offering help to making sure students actually use it.

Key Takeaways

  • Access and action are different. Making support available does not guarantee that students will take the first step.
  • Students benefit from support across a range of needs, including everyday concerns that may not require clinical care.
  • A connected experience can make it easier for students to find the right support and move forward when their needs change.
  • Connected Care for Every Student brings together Reach, Engage, Support and Treat so campuses can support more students with greater continuity.

Access opens the door. Engagement brings results.

A campus can offer a strong portfolio of student support resources, but they aren’t enough if students don’t know when, where and how to use them. TimelyCare and College Pulse call the distance between support being available and a student taking that first step the activation gap. In a recent national survey of more than 1,100 college and university students:

  • 92% were aware of at least one resource ranging from academic and basic-needs support to mental health resources, while 59% had actually used one.
  • 68% said they have told someone they were “fine” or “okay” when they actually were not.
  • 83% indicated a low-pressure first step would help them decide where they needed to talk to someone.

Students can have access to everything they may need, and still be unsure about what to do next. A student who is stressed, lonely or overwhelmed may not know whether what they’re experiencing warrants getting help. Could they use a self-care resource? Should they get peer support? Would speaking to a student success coach help? Is it time to talk to a therapist?

Every student does not need clinical treatment, but every student can benefit from a clear, relevant way to access support services available to them to succeed academically and emotionally.

Campus support often grows over time. Counseling services, virtual programs, wellness initiatives, basic-needs resources, peer support and academic services can each make a real difference. But a longer list of options does not always make the path clearer for students.

When students have to sort through separate resources on their own, they may delay getting help or disengage before support begins. A connected experience can reduce that complexity by helping students start where they are and move forward when their needs change.

What is Connected Care for Every Student?

Connected Care for Every Student is TimelyCare’s model for reaching and supporting students across different levels of need, from proactive engagement and everyday skill-building to human support and licensed clinical care.

The model brings four connected layers together so students can enter at the point that fits their needs and move between levels of support without starting over.

The four connected layers

Reach Proactive outreach helps campuses connect with students early and identify students who may be struggling, rather than waiting for them to identify a need, fall behind or ask for help. Engage Students can use self-directed or AI-guided support to build skills around everyday concerns such as stress, sleep, motivation, academic pressure, relationships, confidence and belonging. This layer includes a self-care resource library, Peer Community and TimelyCare’s AI-powered well-being guide. It gives students a private, low-pressure place to start on their own terms. Support When students want to connect with someone, they can access emotional support, coaching and crisis support. Care Coordinators also help students navigate next steps and move between levels of support when appropriate. Treat Students who need licensed clinical care can access counseling, psychiatry and medical care through TimelyCare’s clinicians and licensed clinicians and care teams. The technology supports the experience, but it is not the whole model. Care Coordinators and clinical teams help keep students connected as they move between levels of support and, when needed, to campus or community resources.
Reach

Proactive outreach helps campuses connect with students early and identify students who may be struggling, rather than waiting for them to identify a need, fall behind or ask for help.

Engage

Students can use self-directed or AI-guided support to build skills around everyday concerns such as stress, sleep, motivation, academic pressure, relationships, confidence and belonging. This layer includes a self-care resource library, Peer Community and TimelyCare’s AI-powered well-being guide. It gives students a private, low-pressure place to start on their own terms.

Support

When students want to connect with someone, they can access emotional support, coaching and crisis support. Care Coordinators also help students navigate next steps and move between levels of support when appropriate.

Treat

Students who need licensed clinical care can access counseling, psychiatry and medical care through TimelyCare’s clinicians and licensed clinicians and care teams.

The technology supports the experience, but it is not the whole model. Care Coordinators and clinical teams help keep students connected as they move between levels of support and, when needed, to campus or community resources.

Would Connected Care for Every Student benefit your campus?

A connected model can help institutions consider whether their current approach gives students a clear path to support. Student support leaders should ask:

  • Are we reaching students before they have to identify a need on their own?
  • Do students have a low-pressure first step for everyday concerns?
  • Can students build practical skills without booking an appointment?
  • Can they connect with a real person when self-directed support is not enough?
  • Can students move between outreach, support and clinical care without starting over?
  • Can we see whether the strategy is engaging the full student population?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, Connected Care for Every Student may offer a clearer way forward.

A clearer first step can change what happens next

Students often experience a challenge long before an institution sees a signal such as missed classes, disengagement or a withdrawal request. An easier first step gives students an earlier opportunity to build skills, connect with someone or access care when they need it.

For campuses, connected care can help more students find support, help teams focus their expertise where it is needed most and give leaders a more complete view of engagement and emerging needs.

Connected care starts with an easier first step

FAQs

What is the student activation gap?

The activation gap is the distance between support being available and a student taking the first step to use it. Students may have access to resources but still feel unsure about where to start or which type of support fits their needs.

What is Connected Care for Every Student?

Connected Care for Every Student is TimelyCare’s model for connecting proactive engagement, everyday well-being support, human support and licensed clinical care. It is designed to help students find an easier first step and stay connected as their needs change.

What are the four layers of Connected Care for Every Student?

The four layers are Reach, Engage, Support and Treat. Together, they help campuses proactively reach students, offer self-directed tools, connect students with people and provide licensed clinical care when needed.

Does AI replace counselors or other human support?

No. TimelyCare’s AI-powered well-being guide is designed to help students take an easier first step, not replace people or licensed care. Students can connect with human support or clinical care as their needs change.
