Generation Z Students: The New Digital Natives

Move over millennials: Generation Z is taking over the American population. While you know Generation Y (aka: millennials) as the high-tech, digitally-inclined group, Generation Z is knocking millennials out of the park. Otherwise known as Gen Z (also iGen or Centennials), this generation is made up of true digital natives. We’re taking a deeper look at this group that is now entering the higher education space.

Quick facts:

 

  • Born between 1996 and 2010 (Source: Business Insider)
  • Raised on the internet and social media, and know no life before the internet
  • Youngest, most ethnically-diverse, largest generation in America’s history
  • Stereotyped as tech-addicted, anti-social, social justice warriors
  • Pursuing college more than previous generations
  • More likely to have a parent with a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • More open to different gender identities

Interesting stats:

  • Gen Z consumers make up 61 million individuals in the U.S. alone, and are expected to make up 30% of the labor force by 2030. Source: U.S. Census Bureau
  • Gen Z has a deep understanding of how technology can transform the way we work and live. 80% said they aspire to work with cutting-edge technology. Source: Dell
  • 91% said technology would influence job choice among similar employment offers. Source: Dell
  • 80% said they believe technology and automation will create a more equitable work environment. Source: Dell
  • Gen Z is the most diverse generation in history, with just over half of them identified as non-Hispanic whites. Source: Pew Research

While we understand the advanced technology knowledge of Gen Z, we must also understand this generation’s views on mental health:

  • 76% feel they have a responsibility to help friends that are struggling. Source: EVERFI 2019
  • 80% would feel compassion for someone with a mental health condition. Source: EVERFI 2019
  • 79% felt that when faced with challenges, he or she had the power to change his or her situation for the better. Source: iGen, Dr. Jean Twinge
  • Reported levels of loneliness higher than any generation. Source: Cigna survey

With global connectivity only on the rise, it’s important that the higher education industry knows how to speak to and assist the needs of Gen Z, especially when it comes to mental health. For this reason, TimelyCare is extremely focused on the mental health needs of students.

Founding Chief Strategy Officer, Chris Clark is passionate about helping leaders in higher education realize the transformative power and utility of virtual care to address a range of challenges experienced in our world today. Chris’ experience and leadership in strategy and revenue generation enabled TimelyCare to scale from a niche startup to the gold standard in virtual care for higher education. Now as colleges and university leaders seek solutions that improve student well-being, engagement and retention, they turn to TimelyCare more than anyone else.

Prior to TimelyCare, Chris was a leader in Amgen’s Global Commercial Learning and Performance organization. In this role, he was instrumental in building a new internal consultative function supporting the sales organization. Previous to this role, Chris led a sales team for Amgen in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Chris began his career in the pharmaceutical industry in 2002, working for Merck for 13 years, winning multiple national awards in sales and sales management. His experience at Merck, including sales, training, people management, account management and strategy development, was invaluable in founding and scaling TimelyCare.
